SRC: Every Hero Has a Story: Local Heroes–Fire Fighters

 

Displayed picture books and non-fiction firefighter books

Set up DVD theater on the stage “Popular Mechanics: Firefighters and Other Life-Saving Heroes” was a good choice. (Lots of other possibilities as well.)

Gave color-coded tickets (12 for each)  to kids as they arrived – these were collected at the fire safety house later. (Should have sign in parking lot directing people to get free tickets inside the library)

Opened program by reading  Gingerbread Man: Loose on the Fire Truck by Laura Murray (younger) or No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons) by Pendziwol (older group).  (Both included female firefighters – nice since all our visiting firefighters were male.) 

Other possibilities: My Mother is a Firefighter by Lois Grambling, Sparky the Fire Dog by Don Hoffman (precautionary tale) , Firefighter Frank by Monica Wellington (good for very young kids) Next time: Fire Engine No. 9 by Mike Austin looks great!

Younger (piggyback song): “If you hear the fire alarm, feel the door (2x)…  (Tune: If you’re happy and you know it..)… other verses, “crawl on the floor”  “if your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll”

Optional song: Stop, Drop and Roll  from “Don’t drink the bathwater & other things you need to know” by Victor Johnson.

Firefighter Phil talked to kids about fire safety, while Firefighter Ron donned fire suit, face mask and helmet (did “Darth Vadar” breathing and voice so kids wouldn’t be afraid of a real encounter.

Afterwards first group of 12 kids (and accompanying caregivers) headed to the parking lot to tour the fire truck and go through the safety/smoke house, while the rest did craft tables.  After the first group returned, the next group headed out.

 “Hurray for Superheroes” – we’ll share some stories of heroes with super-powers then create our own superhero drawings, “fly” and have a superhero parade around the library.

Story/Craft: Superhero Transportation

Afterschool Special: Superhero Transportation (ages 3-10) 
Get an early start on our Superhero Summer. We'll read about a fantastical car then design our own wild and wonderful vehicles!

Display: Picture books, graphic novels, early readers, and non-fiction (741/743 drawing/cartoons) on superheroes for kids to browse as they arrive.

Music as kids are arriving: Tracks 1-4 from Play! (album by Milkshake) – end with track #4 “Superhero”  (play the whole album while kids doing craft later).

Open with discussion: “how do superheroes get around?”  Many fly, but some have other transportation – anyone know any?  --  Batman’s “Batmobile”  Wonder Woman’s “Invisible Plane”  --  ask “if they were making a SuperMobile, what would they have it do?”

Read: If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen (has a great dedication! kid designs car with built in swimming pool, snack bar, robot driver, boat/sub/plane options)  Optional: Read/Show: Fast Food by Saxton Freymann and/or Mama Zooms by Jane Cowen-Fletcher, Batmobiles and Batcycles: The Engineering Behind Batman’s Vehicles by Tammy Enz (741.5973 ENZ)

Craft: Design a “SuperVehicle!”   (supplies: 12x18” light cardboard or card stock, scissors, markers, hole punches, construction paper (including pre-cut circles which made great spinning wheels), paper fasteners, pipe cleaners, glue sticks, tape, pencils, staplers, scrap paper).  Kids were given free rein to design any vehicle they wished…and they did very creatively -- some just used markers, others cut things out and made 3-dimensional designs.

Fancy Nancy Tea Party

Ages 4-9: Fancy Nancy Tea Party: Oh-la-la! Dress in your fancy clothes and join us for a tea party starring the exquisite Mademoiselle “Fancy Nancy.” 

Note, we will be making and serving refreshments
so please alert us to any food allergy issues.

As kids were arriving, asked them for “fancy” words – wrote them on white board

Read:  Fancy Nancy: Bonjour Butterfly – added and define more fancy words on the white board.

Stations:
· Make fancy placemats 11x14 paper (kids cut out butterfly shape, then decorate with sequins & markers – encouraged them to make their name “fancy” and write some of the fancy words from the white board)*

· Make napkin rings – Stack 5 4x4 inch tissue papers.  Fan-fold tissue paper pile, fasten with pipe cleaner, pull up each petal to make flowers (tissue paper, pipe cleaners), then loop the pipe cleaner to make the napkin ring. http://www.nickjr.com/crafts/tissue-paper-flowers.jhtml To fold the napkin: Fan fold a guest quality paper napkin (it is fancier if you start from a point rather than a flat side), then slip the folded napkin inside the napkin ring and fan it out. (Napkin rings can become wrist corsages for the parade.)

· Decorate die cut crowns or hats with feathers and sequins.

· Optional: make wands/wings - Crepe paper streamers wands – omitted, no time

· Make tea sandwiches – Materials: hand wipes, white bread, cream cheese, jam (squeeze containers easiest), wax paper, rolling pins, plastic knives, paper plates – had kids clean hands, then cut crusts off bread, put slice between two pieces of waxed paper & flatten with rolling pin, spread with cream cheese & jam, roll up then cut into pinwheels and put on paper plate*   Optional, could have also made triangle sandwiches with bread, cream cheese & thinly-sliced cucumbers.

· Optional: Make fruit kabobs --   fancy toothpicks, grapes, blue berries pink lemonade for refreshments*

Music: Anything classical or something like Bibbidi Bobbidi Bach: More Favorite Disney Tunes in the Style of Classical Composers.

· When crafts were done, each child had a placemat, crown, napkin ring, napkin and pinwheel sandwiches.
 We removed the craft supplies and served pink lemonade with strawberries & blueberries for garnish (“fancy”) and tea cookies.

· After our “tea,” gave away “Fancy Nancy” paper fans as party favors (had these left over from another program, don’t know the original source.) -- would have made wands if I didn't have these.

· Finished with a Fancy Nancy follow the leader parade* around the library.
