Book: I Got Two Dogs by John Lithgow (CD Book) – aside to parents: using CD because Lithgow sings this much better than me, point out our CD/book collection – great for using with kids on drives (parent can drive/child can listen to book)
Flannel: Any Kind of Dog based on the book by Lynn Reiser – repetative story so kids & parents can chime in on refrain “Richard wanted a dog, but his mom said a dog was ‘too much trouble!’”
Puppet/Song: How Much is that Doggie in the Window?
Here’s a kid who got a new dog…and learns it can speak!
Book: RRRALPH by Lois Elhert – child points out how his dog knows how to speak…words like “ROOF” “ROUGH” etc. – can booktalk Martha Speaks series
Song: Do Your Ears Hang Low? (one version here: http://www.kididdles.com/lyrics/d006.html used a pair of pantyhose as my ears –suit actions to words)
Book: Hunky Dory Ate It by Katie Evans – rhyming, phonemic awareness
Optional Flannel: The Cake that Mack Ate based on the book by Rose Robart or a version of Old Mother Hubbard
Action song: “Puppy Dog Jig” from album of the same name by Owen Duggan (ok, not exceptional)
Book: Bark, George by Jules Feiffer – George the dog meows, quacks, moos etc. until a vet reaches down to extra the animals inside…surprise ending, George says “Hello”!
Sign Language Song: “Hear the Little Doggie” from Pick Me Up, Fun Songs for Learning Signs
Flannel/Song: BINGO (identify letters – clap for each removed letter – listening skills great for pre-reading.)
Video: Angus Lost (Phoenix Films) – wordless live action film based on the book by Marjorie Flack -- had using listening skills, here kids follow the narrative strictly visually
Optional craft: (for next year) Create 2D or 3D dogs with recycled materials in the style of Lois Ehlert
Other book possibilities: Waggle by Sarah McMemory, Dogs by Emily Gravitt (emphasis on opposites, cleverly narrated by a cat!), don’t think kids really get: The Pigeon Wants a Puppy by Mo Willems
