Holiday Fun: Celebrate Mardi Gras   Ages 5-10

·         Play Buckwheat Zydeco as children arrive (and when doing crafts)

·         Discuss the holiday -- show where Louisiana is on a map, show pictures from a non-fiction book such as Mardi Gras by Ann Heinrichs

·         Read Cajun Cornbread Boy by Diane De Las Casas

·         Sing “Alligator Pie”  by Dennis Lee – show the rhyming scheme have kids suggest rhymes for additional verses (original  poem  (on page 2)  dreadful Barney video demonstrates the tune. 

·         Show My Aunt Came Back from Louisiane – youtube video

·         Crafts:  Crowns (die-cut, décor – feathers, pompoms, little square tiles -- suggested doing patterns – a preschool mathematics skill), Masks (die-cut, ribbons, décor),  Necklaces (pipe cleaners and beads) --- gluesticks & regular glue.
