Picture This--Untraditional Fairy Tales: Rumpelstiltskin’s Daughter (Ages 5-10)

Join us for a reading of this new take on an old tale and then create a self-portrait suitable for hanging in the king’s castle! (Paint will be available so please dress accordingly)

Rumpelstiltskin's daughter may not be able to spin straw into gold, but she is more than a match for a monarch whose greed has blighted an entire kingdom.

After reading the story, we looked at the portraits of the king around his castle done in the style of famous paintings, e.g. Blue Boy & the Mona Lisa. Showed pictures of the originals then had kids create their own self-portraits in the style of famous painters. (Supplies: 12x18 cardboards, paper plate palattes, tempra paint, brushes, water cups, paper towels)

Celebrate National Writing Month -- Write & Illustrate Your Own Book!

Are you a budding author or illustrator? Stop by the Youth Services Desk any time during November to pick up instructions and materials then bring in your finished manuscript back to the library by December 5th. Books will be spiral bound and all authors and illustrators who create a book will be celebrated at an author reading and reception.

Want to jump-start your book or get some fun ideas?  Bridgewater Librarian and picture book lover Carol Simon Levin will help you get your creative juices flowing at our kickoff. (Grades K-6, registration required).

Display books about writing books for kids to peruse as they arrive.

Book:  I Am a Story by Dan Yaccarino (A history of stories from cave drawings to present-day books)  Sarah’s Story by Bill Harley(arrived too late for 2016 – use for 2017), A Squiggly Story by Andrew Larsonor or  Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett might also be great.

Book: This is My Book (and No One Else!) by Mark Pett (A panda interrupts an author’s attempt to control the narrative of his book – gives ideas for pop ups etc. as well)

Action/Song: “Throw it Out the Window” (silly riff on nursery rhymes)

Book: The Plot Chickens by Mary Jane and Herm Auch (parts of the book within a story) – might use instead: Pick a Picture, Write a Story by Kristen McCurry or Look at my Book: How Kids Can Write & Illustrate Terrific Books by Loreen Leedy 808.02 LEE or How this Book was Made by Rex Barnett (A humorous look at the real book-making process – author, editor, illustrator, printing, distribution, reader)

Book: I Got Two Dogs by John Lithgow (CD Book) – aside to parents: using CD because Lithgow sings this much better than me, point out our CD/book collection – great for using with kids on drives (parent can drive/child can listen to book)

Flannel: Any Kind of Dog based on the book by Lynn Reiser – repetative story so kids & parents can chime in on refrain “Richard wanted a dog, but his mom said a dog was ‘too much trouble!’”

Puppet/Song: How Much is that Doggie in the Window?

Here’s a kid who got a new dog…and learns it can speak!

Book: RRRALPH by Lois Elhert – child points out how his dog knows how to speak…words like “ROOF” “ROUGH” etc. – can booktalk Martha Speaks series

Song: Do Your Ears Hang Low?  (one version here: http://www.kididdles.com/lyrics/d006.html used a pair of pantyhose as my ears –suit actions to words)

Image result

Book: Hunky Dory Ate It by Katie Evans – rhyming, phonemic awareness

Optional Flannel: The Cake that Mack Ate based on the book by Rose Robart or a version of Old Mother Hubbard

Action song: “Puppy Dog Jig” from album of the same name by Owen Duggan (ok, not exceptional)

Book: Bark, George by Jules Feiffer – George the dog meows, quacks, moos etc. until a vet reaches down to extra the animals inside…surprise ending, George says “Hello”!

Sign Language Song: “Hear the Little Doggie” from Pick Me Up, Fun Songs for Learning Signs

Flannel/Song: BINGO (identify letters – clap for each removed letter – listening skills great for pre-reading.)

Video: Angus Lost (Phoenix Films) – wordless live action film based on the book by Marjorie Flack  -- had using listening skills, here kids follow the narrative strictly visually

Optional craft: (for next year) Create 2D or 3D dogs with recycled materials in the style of Lois Ehlert

Other book possibilities: Waggle by Sarah McMemory, Dogs by Emily Gravitt (emphasis on opposites, cleverly narrated by a cat!), don’t think kids really get: The Pigeon Wants a Puppy by Mo Willems
